What this site is

WhatRooftopTent exists to answer one question: which rooftop tent is right for your vehicle, your group, and the way you camp? Rooftop tents are a big purchase, often $1,000 to $4,000, and the listings rarely tell you the thing that matters most, whether a given tent actually suits your rig and your trips. We built a quiz and a set of buyer's guides to close that gap.

How we choose and compare tents

Every recommendation on this site is built from the same spec-driven method:

  • Vehicle fit first. We weigh each tent against realistic roof and dynamic load limits for the vehicle classes that buyers actually drive, from small crossovers to full-size trucks.
  • Published specifications. Capacity, closed and open weight, shell type, sleeping area, and setup time come from manufacturer documentation and retailer listings, not guesswork.
  • Use case over hype. A great four-season hardshell is the wrong answer for a budget weekend camper, and vice versa. We match tents to seasons, group size, and budget rather than ranking by price alone.
  • Honest trade-offs. Every tent we feature lists real cons, not just selling points.

What we don't do

We are transparent about our limits. We do not claim to have hands-on tested every tent we cover; our guidance is based on published specifications, manufacturer documentation, and how those specs map to real vehicles and trips. We never accept payment to rank a product higher, and a tent's placement is never influenced by whether it earns us a commission.
